Max Pircher: Between wedding plans and new beginnings

In recent years there has been silence about the first South Tyrolean player in the National Football League (NFL). Maximilian Pircher now wants to relaunch his career with a new team and make his first appearance in the league with the highest turnover in the world. At the same time, the 24-year-old is under personal stress, as the wedding is planned for the summer.

Maximilian Pircher fulfilled his dream in 2021 and earned a contract with the Los Angeles Rams through the so-called International Pathway Program (IPP). The 24-year-old promptly won the Super Bowl with the Californians in his first season, but was not used in the regular season. Last year he moved north to the Detroit Lions, where he was also not allowed to play. A newly introduced rule should now mean that he can finally demonstrate his qualities as an offensive tackle in the Seattle Seahawks uniform.

To explain: Every NFL team has 90 roster spots. If a player from the IPP is added, there are 91. At the end of the preparation, each club has to decide who will go into the active roster (53 places) and who will be assigned to the practice squad, i.e. the training group (16 places). A player in this training group cannot play in an NFL game until he is activated. What's new: From the 2024 season, every team in the training group will have an additional place for an international player. These IPP professionals can then be called up in the fighting team three times per season without putting a strain on the active roster. This will make it easier for players from this program to get match practice.

It should work this year

This undoubtedly also plays into Pircher's hands. “This year the regulations are more favorable for IPP players. “I will do everything I can so that I can play and help the team as much as possible,” says Pircher in an interview SportNews. “And of course I want to win the Super Bowl.” He has already achieved this feat with the Rams. The project is much more difficult with the Seahawks, as they missed the playoffs last year. As a result, the club parted ways with legendary coach Pete Carroll after 13 years. The new man at the command bridge is Mike MacDonald.

The 36-year-old is one reason why Pircher ended up on the US West Coast. “I spoke to my agents about a possible contract extension in Detroit. But then we heard about the Seahawks' interest. They flew me in, completed medical and physical tests and finally signed me,” says Pircher. “The training center and stadium are fantastic. So far I’ve only seen good things from Seattle.”

The last few weeks have been turbulent for the 2,03 meter giant. In addition to the move, wedding planning was also on the agenda. “My fiancée Katie organized the house, the car and everything else here in Seattle so I could concentrate fully on training. “Wedding planning is of course also a big topic at the moment,” says Pircher, who will be marrying his fiancée this year.
