Better than ever: Italy is celebrating record games

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Azzurri exceeded all expectations and won a total of 40 medals - more than ever before at the largest sporting event in the world. There were 10 gold medals (two times more than in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016), 10 silver and 20 bronze. This surpassed the previous record set by Los Angeles 1932 and Rome 1960: At that time, the azure team won 36 medals each.

The Games in Tokyo also had other special features. Italy won at least one medal on each of the 16 days of competition - something that has never happened before. In addition, the precious metals were distributed across 19 different disciplines, the best value so far was 17 (2004 in Athens). In plain language this means: The Azzurri are once again playing in the concert of the greats worldwide.

The biggest highlight of the games was athletics, where the level of competition is enormous. And yet Italy won 5 gold medals here, with three precious metals in particular standing out above all else. There would be that Marcell Jacobs' 100m Olympic victory , there would be the golden one Italy's 4x100 m relay (with Jacobs, Lorenzo Patta, Eseosa Desalu and Filippo Tortu) and there is the historic double victory of high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi, who took the shared the gold medal with his Qatari competitor and friend Essa Mutaz Barshim . Italy takes 10th place in the medal table. Mixed balance sheet in Germany While Italy is celebrating, the mood in Germany is subdued. 37 precious metals, including 10 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze - that's 5 medals fewer than at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro and 4 fewer than the previous negative mark in Beijing 2008. The unsuccessful appearance of all ball sports teams and the weak performance of previous medal guarantors such as rowers and racing canoeists as well as in the cycling velodrome was countered by only a few outliers. Tennis sensational winner Alexander Zverev, long jump star Malaika Mihambo and the duels for gold wrestler Aline Rotter-Focken could not save the overall balance alone.

The USA, on the other hand, is the most successful Olympic nation at the Summer Games for the third time in a row. The American team won 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze at the Tokyo competition, just ahead of China. The host of the upcoming 2022 Winter Games in Beijing took second place (38/32/18) ahead of Japan (27/14/17). The organizer of the Tokyo Games achieved what was clearly the best record in its Olympic history. The best European representative was Great Britain (22/21/22).
