European Games: Steinhauser misses medal in triathlon relay

Verena Steinhauser, a South Tyrolean, also took part in the European Games in Krakow (Poland) on Saturday. However, the Azzurri missed out on a medal in the triathlon relay.

In the triathlon relay, 4 athletes (2 women/2 men) started per country; each starter first had to swim 300 meters, then cycle 5 kilometers and finally run 1,5 kilometers.

The Italian relay consisted of Michele Sarzilla (1), Verena Steinhauser (2), Gianluca Pozzatti (3) and Angelica Prestia (4). Sarzilla handed over to Steinhauser in fourth place after 16 minutes; the 28-year-old impressed in her group with the best time on the bike and a strong running performance. The woman from Brixen sent Pozzatti into the lap in intermediate third place, who was able to maintain his position. Goalkeeper Prestia was able to keep up for a long time, but she collapsed while running and in the end the Azzurri only managed 3th place with a total time of 1:08.01 hours.

Norway secured the gold medal (1:07.29 hours) ahead of Great Britain (1:07.33) and Hungary (1:07.40).

For Verena Steinhauser, the European Games are now over Elite class individual races showed South Tyrol's Iron Lady with 7th place.
