After the shock, Yasmine Hamza finds new hope

Yasmine Hamza was born with a passion for badminton. With two parents who played badminton, it was a logical consequence. With a lot of hard work and perseverance, she went her own way and got stronger every year. She also did well internationally.

She was doing excellently in qualifying for the Olympic Games and was almost qualified for Paris 2024 before it happened: "I can still remember it clearly. It happened in the second set in Saarbrücken. I immediately noticed that my knee was broken and Paris was no longer an option," she describes the shock.

Operation was a perfect success Difficult days followed, her sporting world collapsed. Knee specialist Florian Perwanger operated on the badminton player, and a strenuous rehabilitation period began at Pro Motus. Hamza: "I would like to thank Doctor Perwanger for his perfect operation and my thanks also go to Stefano Camin and Federico Tiribello, who got me back on track with physiotherapy and rehabilitation training. Psychologist Gabriele Ghirardello got me back on track mentally."

She admits openly: "This injury was the worst moment of my career. Without my parents and friends, I would hardly have made it. I immersed myself in my studies, learned a lot. Otherwise, I would probably have had to think too much and too often about Paris. Fortunately, I made rapid progress. Once I could move, everything was easier."

From May onwards, Hamza was able to play badminton again in a controlled manner, and proper training began in the summer. The 21-year-old also watched the competitions in Paris. With a lot of sadness? "No, not at all. I followed the games with excitement, the motivation in me was almost even greater," she explains.

Hamza sometimes struggles alone The Bozen native has now competed in two tournaments and reached the quarter-finals in Slovenia and Poland. Before her serious injury, she was ranked 2th in the world. "Now my ranking is 89th. Only the top 220 is protected. So it's all about moving up step by step," Hamza says again.

Intensive training, physiotherapy, rest periods, eating and sleeping fill her 24-hour day. There are also a lot of tournaments coming up. She is going to Africa for 3 weeks soon, Hamza wants to win at the Italian Championships in November, followed by the European Mixed Championships.

She usually books her own flights, and at tournaments abroad she is often alone. But Yasmine masters everything; at 21, she is fully engaged in life. The down-to-earth, committed young woman is a fighter. Qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles begins in 2027. "By then, I want to make up ground in the rankings and be at the top of the list at important tournaments."
