Yasmine Hamza back on the winner's podium

After more than a year, Yasmine Hamza is back on top of the podium. The 21-year-old from Bolzano won the singles at the world ranking tournament in Algeria (International Series). After losing four finals recently, it was her fifth triumph at a world ranking tournament and her third in singles.

Yasmine Hamza only feels her cruciate ligament tear on October 31, 2023 in the world rankings. But if she continues to play so well, she will soon be back in the top 100. On Tuesday, she will at least return to the top 200: thanks to her outstanding performance in Algeria. The top player of the SBS - South Tyrol Badminton School reached the final in the capital Algiers without losing a set.

There she was the underdog against Loh Zhi Wei from Malaysia, who is the same age. Hamza was behind 16:18 and 18:19 in the first set, and at 1:20 she took the lead for only the second time in this set. "After narrowly losing a set in the final a week ago in Egypt, I really wanted to win this first set. I tried to play on the attack in this phase and was rewarded for it," said a delighted Hamza. Her rival from Asia lost the plot, but Hamza also stepped on the accelerator in the second set and ultimately won 19:22, 20:21. "Her improvement during the three-week Africa tour was clearly visible today and she did a great job mentally too," said a delighted coach Csaba Hamza.

The well-deserved reward: after four defeats in the finals, Hamza wins her fifth gold medal in total, the third in singles. At only 21 years old, Hamza is by far the most successful South Tyrolean badminton player in history. She now has 22 medals in world ranking tournaments (12 in singles).
