North Tyrolean climber wins Olympic medal

Climber Jakob Schubert won the third Austrian medal at the Olympic Games in Paris on Friday with bronze.

The North Tyrolean only had to admit defeat to Briton Toby Roberts and Japanese Sorato Anraku in the Boulder&Lead competition in Le Bourget. The Innsbruck native secured Austria's 100th medal at the Summer Games. The six-time world champion had already finished third at the Olympic premiere of climbing in 2021 in Tokyo.

"I have the feeling that there was a lot more in it. I left a lot of points behind in bouldering in particular. I'm already mourning the loss of one or two of the top athletes. Silver was definitely within reach, and gold would have been possible too. So I'm a little disappointed at the moment. But I won a medal at the Olympics, which is a wonderful thing. It could have turned out differently, and I'm very happy about that," Schubert said in an interview with ORF.

Schubert was in fifth place after the bouldering part of the final of the best eight. After a successful appeal by the French, he was ultimately deducted 4,8 points, which were no longer relevant, in the medal fight, but he kept his position. In his favorite discipline, he was unable to get past 19-year-old Roberts and 17-year-old top favorite Anraku.
