South Tyrol's young climbers show off

The last stage of the Junior Cup took place in Mezzolombardo with a speed competition. The participants for the youth Italian championship were determined.

The last competition of the 2023/24 season took place last weekend in Mezzolombardo. At the end, a speed competition was on the agenda. In addition to the individual ranking, the overall ranking for the season was also determined. This is the basis for the composition of the Italian Youth Championship. Over 50 athletes from South Tyrol will compete in the individual competition in the U12 to U20 categories. These take place in Brixen and Bruneck at the end of May and then in San Martino di Castrozza at the beginning of June.


There is a team ranking for the U10 category. 24 children from South Tyrol are taking part. You start in 6 teams, 3 with boys and 3 with girls. The Junior Cup took place in the speed facility in the Parco Dalla Brida in Mezzolombardo and was organized by the Gruppo Rocciatori Piaz.

The U16, U18 and U20 took part on Saturday. They climbed on the standardized, official speed route, which is also used in the World Cup. Speed ​​climbing is about climbing up the route as quickly as possible. The climbers are secured from above.

Emmy Lang from AVS St. Pauls (9,58) climbed the best time for women and Alex Pichler from AVS Meran (6,91) for men. The U10 to U14 categories started the race on Sunday. They climbed on a shortened route with additional holds.

In the girls' U10 category, Theresa Martini from AVS St. Pauls was fast with 8,45. In the boys U12 category, Jonas Schuen from AVS Bruneck was impressive with 5,97.
