1st Italian home victory at this year's Giro d'Italia

There was an Italian winner in the 4th stage of the 107th Giro d'Italia. Jonathan Milan prevailed in the final sprint.

On the stage to Andora (190 kilometers), Jonathan Milan secured the first Italian victory of the day near the Mediterranean coast ahead of the Australian Kaden Groves. Third place went to the German Phil Bauhaus.

As expected, there were no changes at the top of the overall standings. Top favorite Tadej Pogacar successfully defended the leader's pink jersey and is 46 seconds ahead of last year's second-placed Geraint Thomas from Wales. A second back third is the Colombian Daniel Martinez, captain of the Bora-hansgrohe team.

Africa star Biniam Girmay again unlucky

The first prominent task took place on Tuesday. Africa's cycling star Biniam Girmay fell twice within a few kilometers on a rain-soaked road and was unable to continue the race. The Giro remains associated with a lot of bad luck for the former Gent-Wevelgem winner. In May 2022, Girmay won the tenth stage and got the cork of his champagne bottle in his eye at the subsequent award ceremony. Then he had to give up.

The sprinters will probably fight for victory on Wednesday too. On the 178 kilometers between Genoa and Lucca there are only two small mountain climbs to overcome. There are unlikely to be any major changes in the overall ranking until Friday, when a 40,6 kilometer long individual time trial from Foligno to Perugia is on the program.
