Driving licence revoked? Cycling stars face repercussions.

Cycling star Tadej Pogacar faces legal repercussions and the loss of his driver's license after his victory at the Tour of Flanders.

According to media reports, the East Flanders public prosecutor's office will open an investigation after Pogacar, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, and other riders failed to stop at a level crossing despite warning lights. The incident occurred in Wichelen, approximately 65 of the 278 kilometers had been covered.

According to multiple media reports, the professional cyclists face a driving ban of at least eight days and a fine of between 400 and 5.000 euros. Pogacar and his teammates may even have to appear in court in person.

Did not stop at the level crossing

According to the regulations of the UCI, cycling's world governing body, riders must stop at level crossings when the warning light is red. In the worst-case scenario, they face disqualification. However, this is unlikely in this case, as it would affect a large number of riders. The Belgian track cycling organization expressed disappointment with the riders' behavior.

"The rules are clear: you have to stop at red. That also applies to a cycling race," said spokesman Frédéric Petit. "One and a half million Flemish people watched the race. It is obviously a very bad example when cyclists ignore such a signal, especially since we conduct numerous awareness campaigns on the topic of safety at level crossings."
