Pirrone wants to attack at home European Championships: “The goal is a medal”

The 22-year-old from Steinmannwald near Leifers was nominated by Italy's national team for the U23 individual time trial next Thursday. The starting signal is at 9.15 a.m. at the Muse in Trento, the finish is in the “Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici”. Pirrone is a candidate for the top places on the 22,4 kilometer long, fairly flat route and on a good day she should definitely be in contention for the medals. Pirrone has already proven in recent years at the U23 European Championships that she can be at the forefront. Two years ago in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, she won bronze in the individual time trial, her specialty. Last year in Plouay, France, she finished fourth in the individual time trial and missed out on a medal by a measly 2 seconds. She covered the 4 kilometer route at an average speed of 3 km/h in 25,6:41,24 minutes. “I’m going to the European Championships confidently and will do my best.” Elena Pirrone This season, the 22-year-old, who wrote South Tyrolean cycling history as a junior in 2017 with gold in the individual time trial and road race, often found it difficult. Especially in the spring she didn't really get into shape. As a result, she missed the Olympic Games. She had to wait until last week to be certain that she would be able to compete at the home European Championships in Trento. Because she is generally always good for a top result in individual time trials, she was finally nominated at the last moment. Now Pirrone's form is better again. “I'm going to the European Championships confidently and will do my best there. A European Championship, practically on your doorstep, is of course a special motivation. The goal is a medal,” said Pirrone. Numerous relatives, friends and acquaintances will be there on Thursday to keep their fingers crossed for her. Lots of stars there: these are the favorites The European Championships start on Wednesday with the individual time trial competitions for juniors. The team time trial is scheduled for the afternoon. The final highlight of the European Championship is the elite men's road race on Sunday. There are 179,2 kilometers to cover. There are several well-known names and favorites at the start. The two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia is one of the favorites in the road race. The Belgian Remco Evenepoel and the three-time world champion Peter Sagan from Slovakia can also be expected. The Slovenian Matej Mohoric and the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff are also among the extended circle of favorites on this route. The Azzurri Matteo Trentin and Sonny Colbrelli also want to be at the forefront. In the men's elite individual time trial, which takes place on Thursday, Filippo Ganna is one of the top favorites. He was crowned world champion in this discipline in 2020. Other favorites include Evenepoel, Pogacar and the Swiss Stefan Küng, who is starting as the defending champion. Olympic time trial champion Primoz Roglic is not there. By the way, things are happening in quick succession for the cycling professionals; the world championships will take place in the Belgian region of Flanders from September 18th.
