South Tyrolean record ride at the Track Cycling World Championships

The track world championships for professional cyclists are currently taking place in Chile – and on Thursday two cyclists from the Lower Austrian region made their big appearance there.

In the team sprint (three laps), the Italian trio of Matteo Bianchi from Leifers, Mattia Predomo from Branzoller, and Stefano Minuta (Piedmont) set a new Italian record with a time of 42,847 seconds. Without Bianchi, Italy qualified for the quarterfinals with an eighth-place finish in 43,234 seconds.

Italy finished tied for fifth place in the final standings. They had no chance against the Dutch in the quarterfinals. But the Azzurri are all young, and their long-term goal is the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The 23-year-old Bianchi also has high hopes for the World Championships in his signature discipline, the 1km time trial. He will qualify for the event on Friday.

World Championship gold in the team sprint went to the outstanding Dutch team with a time of 41,691 seconds. They beat Great Britain (42,060) in the final. In the battle for bronze, however, Australia (42,611) prevailed over France (42,861).
