The Dane crossed the finish line eight seconds ahead of Ineos on the 19,6 km course through the Spanish metropolis, securing the yellow jersey. Slovenian favorite Tadej Pogacar and his UAE Team finished third, twelve seconds behind.
With this victory, Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner (2022, 2023), celebrated his first points victory in the duel with Pogacar on the course that passed the Sagrada Familia basilica and featured two short climbs before the finish. Felix Großschartner was one of Pogacar's key supporters at UAE Team Emirates, and the Austrian star rider ultimately finished 2:54 minutes behind – only the time of the best rider from each team counted towards the stage classification.
Evenepoel and Seixas trailing
The Red Bull team, led by Remco Evenepoel, time trial world champion and Olympic gold medalist, and Florian Lipowitz, finished fifth. Evenepoel crossed the finish line 19 seconds behind, while Lipowitz was 35 seconds back. The second stage, a 168,5 km ride on Sunday, will also take place in and around Barcelona and, with its partly hilly terrain, could provide another indication of the favorites for the overall victory. A total of 21 stages, 3.321,2 kilometers, and 54.450 meters of elevation gain await the peloton before the finish in Paris, where the world's most famous cycling race will conclude on July 26.Edit Profile
