Giro delle Dolomiti: The queen stage was tough

The fastest on the timed section from Wolkenstein to the Sellajoch were the Belgian Daan Vermeulen and the German Julia Jederelhauser. On Wednesday the 380 cyclists continue with another well-known pass: the Stilfersjoch.

On the second stage, the participants cycled alongside the two Alpine World Cup skiers Nicol Delago and Alex Vinatzer as well as members of the OK team from Val Gardena's candidacy for the 2029 Alpine Ski World Championships. On the timed section between Wolkenstein and the Sellajoch Belgian Daan Vermeulen the fastest. The 28-year-old, who won the Giro delle Dolomiti in 2018 and came second in the first stage of this year's edition, completed the 8,6 kilometers with 628 meters of altitude in 27.20,18:XNUMX minutes.

“The climb was beautiful. My roommate Mathieu Decock was the first to pull in, I let him pass and someone else followed suit. In the end there were still three cyclists in front and I prevailed in the finish sprint. “I’m very happy about that,” said the cyclist from Deinze in East Flanders. In the finish jump he beat the winner of the first stage, Florian Albecker (RV Lichterfelde-Steglitz eV / 27.24,84). However, the 33-year-old German managed to maintain his lead in the overall standings by just under five seconds. In third place was the Belgian Mathieu Decock, who crossed the finish line ahead of Luca Mazzurana, the first Italian. The South Tyrolean amateur cyclist Eduard Rizzi (Sportler Team / 28.42,62), however, came ninth behind the former professional cyclist Massimiliano Lelli (ASD Max Lelli / 28.39,88).

Julia Jederelhauser for second In the women's field, Julia Jederelhauser from the Oberdorfer Radhaus team once again proved to be the dominator of the event. The 35-year-old German put the competition in their place with a time of 30.06,13:14 minutes, which was also the 18th time in the general ranking. The cyclist from Marktoberdorf now leads the overall ranking with a lead of over XNUMX minutes. “I started with the mindset that there would be bad weather today, but it was still nice! The landscape is fantastic, doing the Sellaronda on the bike is a dream,” enthused Jederelhauser at the finish of the timed section.

Another German, Christiane Schwenk (Team Alé Germany), came in second. She came third in the first stage and is now second overall. Austrian Evelyn Sindler (TUS Radsport Caska Feldbach) came third, 50 seconds behind Schwenk. Sindler finished just one second ahead of the German Susanne Lummer (Team Alè Germany), who in turn was 33 seconds ahead of the Israeli Yifat Safriel.

Now the Stelvio Pass awaits After the queen stage, the next legendary pass is on the agenda for the Giro delle Dolomiti on Wednesday, July 26th: the Stelvio Pass. The participants are taken by shuttle to Prad am Stilfserjoch, where they then get on their bikes and complete the timed section up the Stilfserjoch (23,3 km/1806 meters in altitude) just a few minutes after the start. From the yoke we continue to the Umbrail Pass on the border of Italy and Switzerland. Via the Swiss Münstertal you then reach Vinschgau again, where you have lunch in Glurns. The return journey to Bolzano is then again carried out by shuttle.
