In the rain: Roglic shortens the gap to Rosa

Cycling star Primoz Roglic has reduced his gap to the overall leader despite a crash in preparation for the second and final individual time trial at the 108th Giro d'Italia.

The 35-year-old Giro favorite improved from tenth to fifth place in the overall standings in the race against the clock. The Slovenian, riding for the Red Bull team, reduced the gap to the young overall leader Isaac del Toro to 1:18 minutes after the tenth stage. The 21-year-old Mexican defended the pink jersey and is 25 seconds ahead of his Spanish teammate Juan Ayuso.

After the 28,6 kilometers between Lucca and Pisa, Dutch time trial champion Daan Hoole took the stage victory ahead of Britons Joshua Tarling and Ethan Hayter. No German riders made it into the top ten.

Fall during route reconnaissance

Roglic had started the time trial with a gap of 2:25 minutes due to his crash on Sunday's ninth stage. During the pre-race reconnaissance, Roglic slipped in a corner on wet ground that morning, but escaped unscathed. During Roglic's performance, rain began to fall again.

On Wednesday, the pros face a climbing challenge that, after a flat start, leads up the San Pellegrino in Alpe in the Apennines at 1623 meters. An average gradient of 8,7 percent over 13,5 kilometers awaits. Two shorter climbs follow. The three-week Tour of Italy concludes in Rome on June 1.
