Ötzi Trailrun: Hoffmann and Plattner cheer

They kept the coolest heads in the “heat battle” at this year’s Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun Naturns: Benedikt Hoffmann from Germany and the Austrian Anna Plattner (with a new course record) were the first to cross the finish line on the 30-kilometer-long Sunny Mountain Trail with an altitude of 2100 meters. On the distance half as long as the Naturns Skyrace (1200 m), Daniel Pattis from Tiers, a South Tyrolean, celebrated a home victory, while Nina Engelhard from Germany achieved the fastest time for the women. Both course records were shattered here

It was summery conditions when the 4th Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun Naturns took place on Saturday. While the temperatures were still pleasant at the various starts, the thermometer climbed higher and higher almost every minute. In addition to the technical difficulties of the two distances, there were also the external conditions, which demanded everything from the 540 participants from 20 different nations. Benedikt Hoffmann from Stockach near Lake Constance coped best with the first heat of the year on the Sunny Mountain Trail.

The 39-year-old covered the 30 kilometers and 2100 meters of altitude in 2:55.49 hours. Hoffmann ran in the leading group until halfway through the route before he launched an attack and cleverly defended his lead. He took 14 minutes off his compatriot Sven Koch, 1.26 years his junior, who took second place. An athlete from Germany, Hannes Namberger, also came in third. He lost 1.39 minutes to Hoffmann. As the best South Tyrolean athlete, Matthäus Zöggeler from Vöran came in fourth place with a time of 3:05.00 hours.

Anna Plattner cannot be stopped

In the women's race, North Tyrolean Anna Plattner celebrated a start-to-finish victory. The 31-year-old from Hall in Tyrol, who actually comes from cycling and has previously been active in mountain running, reached the finish in the center of Naturns after 3:23.36 hours on her trail debut, setting a new record. Last year's winner Sarah Kistner from Germany came second, 10.25 minutes behind. Third place went to Juliane Rößler (+20.28), also from Germany. The best local athlete was the grand dame of the South Tyrolean mountain running and trail scene, namely Edeltraud Thaler from Lana. In 4:06.58, the 58-year-old (!) came in an excellent eighth place.

Daniel Pattis celebrated at the Naturns Skyrace (15 km/1200 m). The Tierser won the “long” distance last year and this year set a new course record on the shorter route in 1:14.02 hours. Isacco Costa from Belluno and Armin Larch from Mareit fought a thrilling fight for second place, in which the South Tyrolean lost out by four tenths of a second. Both athletes lost 2.20:XNUMX minutes to Pattis.

Engelhard also with a new best performance

Nina Engelhard from Kassel won the women's race. The 28-year-old won in 1:22.55 hours and, like Pattis, set a new course record for men. 4.29 minutes behind, Elise Poncet, a Frenchwoman, took second place. Anna Hofer from Rabland (+8.51) completed the podium, ensuring a South Tyrolean podium finish among trail runners. With Andrea Schweigkofler from Meran (6th) and Annelise Felderer from Sarnen (9th), two more South Tyroleans ended up in the top ten.

The Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun Naturns was accompanied by the VIP Apple Kids Run, in which no fewer than 100 children took part. Various producers exhibited their products in the Expo area, and participants and spectators were treated to culinary delights on the village square in Naturns. “It was an all-round successful festival dedicated to trail sports and a great start to the running season. The many smiling faces are the reward for the hard work that our team has done over the past few weeks. A big thank you goes to our partners and sponsors, without whom we couldn't hold an event like this. We also need the help of the countless volunteers, whom we would also like to thank from the bottom of our hearts for their commitment. See you next year!” summed up the organizing committee around Deborah Mair, Lea Schweitzer, Daniel Jung and Uli Stampfer.

The actors in the interview:

Benedict Hoffmann (Winner Sunny Mountain Trail): “I really like the region overall, but they also offer really good trail running here. I expected it to be sophisticated, but I didn't expect something so cool. On the second, longer climb I made an attack and increased my lead. I was surprised on the second downhill, where the gap became smaller, but right at the end I fired up the turbo again and it was enough to win.”

Anna Plattner (Winner Sunny Mountain Trail): “It was really super cool. The start was relatively quick. I knew that I had to go at my own pace and not be distracted by those who overtook me. I knew the day would be long and warm – I like that too. Then I gradually worked my way forward. Halfway through the route my colleague told me that I was at the front. From there I actually flew to the finish and didn’t want to let it go anymore.”

Daniel Pattis (Winner Naturns Skyrace): “This victory is completely unexpected because I didn't feel very good before the start today (Saturday, editor's note). But that's how it goes in sports sometimes. I just enjoy being at the start here in Naturns, I really like the route and it’s not that easy from a technical point of view.”

Nina Engelhard
(Winner Naturns Skyrace): “It was phenomenal and I was surprised myself. For me, the uphill classification today was the directional race for the European Championships in mountain running. I wanted to see what went downhill because it was my first downhill. It went from start to finish and still there were moments when I thought: How nice it is to be in the mountains again.”
