Bologna's lesson for Red Bull Salzburg

Red Bull Salzburg suffered a heavy defeat against Bologna in the Europa League group stage.

FC Bologna proved too strong an obstacle for Red Bull Salzburg. The Bulls suffered a 1-4 defeat in Italy on Thursday in the Europa League, their fourth loss in five league matches. A top-24 finish and qualification for the knockout stage are now increasingly out of reach. Their remaining schedule is demanding: next Thursday they travel to Freiburg, followed by home games against FC Basel and away against Aston Villa in January.

The Bulls, for whom Yorbe Vertessen scored (33'), failed to capitalize on their numerous scoring opportunities after the break, not only due to the superior skill of their opponents but also their own inefficiency. Bologna took the lead through Jens Odgaard (26') and effectively sealed the victory with a quickfire double from Thijs Dallinga (51') and Federico Bernardeschi (53'). Riccardo Orsolini added another goal shortly before the final whistle (86'). The current fifth-placed team in Serie A has thus not lost a competitive match since the end of September.

What else happened? Roma struggled to a 2-1 victory against FC Midjylland, Freiburg could only manage a 0-0 draw against Viktoria Pilsen, while VfB Stuttgart won 4-0 against Go Ahead Eagles.

Conference League: Rapid Vienna at the bottom of the table

In the Conference League, Fiorentina suffered a 0-1 defeat against AEK Athens, but are still on course for the knockout stage. Rapid Vienna were thrashed 1-4 by Rakov Czestochowa and are bottom of the group stage with zero points.
