Avellino experienced its heyday in the 80s, when the southern Italian club played in Serie A for ten consecutive years, from 1978 to 1988. The last time FCS faced the Campanian side was over four years ago in the Serie C playoff quarter-finals, where Avellino ultimately prevailed. A year later, FC Südtirol was promoted to Serie B, while Avellino only followed suit this summer.
In the table, the newly promoted team has three more points than FCS. However, coach Raffaele Biancolino is under immense pressure after two recent 0-3 defeats. According to multiple media reports, a loss in Bolzano would have serious consequences for the promotion-winning coach. Avellino is particularly struggling defensively, conceding 25 goals and thus having the second-worst defense in the league.
Avellino is particularly well-stocked in attack. The most recognizable name in the squad is that of Roberto Insigne. The brother of European champion Lorenzo joined the Green-Whites from Palermo in the summer. Furthermore, striker Valerio Crespi and left-back Andrea Cagnano, both former FCS players, will return to Bolzano on Saturday. For the Red-Whites, strikers Silvio Merkaj (returning from suspension) and Emanuele Pecorino (recovering from injury) are available again.
