FC Südtirol versus Wacker Innsbruck – this Tyrolean derby exudes a very special charm. It's hardly surprising, then, that several hundred fans made their way to Rungg on a Friday morning, where a friendly match between the two clubs took place during the international break.
A friendly match that ultimately produced a surprising winner: Innsbruck, who have returned to the Austrian second division and thus to professional football this season, prevailed 3-2 against the Serie B runners-up. A wild second half, in which all five goals were scored, proved decisive.

FCS coach Davide Possanzini gave several regular starters a rest on Friday, putting his faith in backup goalkeeper Rok Vadjunec. Additionally, the two South Tyrolean natives, Fabian Tait and Elias Schrott, started the match. In the first half, FCS had the better of the energetic and committed Innsbruck side, whose player Adrian Lechl from Lüsen was on the pitch for around 70 minutes. Their best chance fell to Lorenzo Anghelè, who found himself completely unmarked from eleven meters, but a Wacker defender cleared the ball off the line for the already beaten goalkeeper.
Suddenly Innsbruck turns up the heat
The FCS defense, led by Andrea Giorgini, remained solid. After the break, coach Possanzini made several substitutions, and this had a noticeable impact on the scoreline. Within just a few minutes, the visitors from Innsbruck scored three times. Wacker captain Rami Tekir first opened the scoring with a deft shot into the near top corner (53rd minute), and then capitalized on a mistake in FCS's build-up play to make it 2-0 (58th minute). Luis Gstrein completed the scoring with a well-executed counter-attack (62nd minute).Adrian Lechl, a South Tyrolean striker playing for Wacker Innsbruck. © det
And what about FC Südtirol? They struggled against Innsbruck's lively pressing, but showed resilience and pulled it back to 2-3. First, Kenny Mixtur was brought down in the penalty area, and Anghelè converted the resulting penalty (66'). Then it was Mixtur himself who scored with a diagonal shot to make it 2-1 (77'). But that was all they could muster.
It continues next Saturday.
With two friendlies within three days (the match against Serie A club Como took place on Wednesday behind closed doors), FC Schaffhausen recently had an intense schedule. The Serie B runners-up continue their campaign on Saturday, October 10th with a home game against Ascoli.Edit Profile
