a Series D

Chievo was brought back to life.

A traditional club returns

Founded in 1929, excluded from Serie B in 2021 and subsequently (almost) disappeared. Chievo Verona was one of the biggest football failures in Italy in recent years. But now the club is returning to the big stage – thanks to a former player.

Sergio Pellissier is more than just a former Chievo Verona player. The long-time captain played almost 500 games for the yellow-blue team and remained loyal to the club even when everything was going south. In 2021, Chievo had to file for bankruptcy as a Serie B club and was no longer registered in the league. Although the club still exists on paper (because it runs youth work at amateur level), de facto Chievo Verona has died.

Pellissier didn't want to accept the bankruptcy of his favorite club and - together with Enzo Zanin - founded FC Clivense, the successor club to Chievo. The goal was always to become a driving force again in Verona. This spring, Pellissier secured financial resources (the brand was purchased with the help of crowdfunding) and a court guarantee that he would be allowed to use the name Chievo Verona again in the future. On Thursday, May 30th, the time had come: Pellissier and Zanin officially announced that FC Clivense would be renamed AC ChievoVerona. The old coat of arms of Chievo was also adopted.

In terms of sport, the club is currently based in Serie D. But it shouldn't stay that way in the long run. Pellissier is working on Chievo's return to professional football. But fans will have to be patient for at least a season.
