Simon Straudi: A “Pustra Bui” wants to make the big leap

At Werder Bremen they think very highly of Simon Straudi - this not only shows the fact that he is already a constant support in the U-19 team. The way in which the Brunecker is treated in his new home also shows great appreciation. “At Bremen I play in the U-19 team and am also in the top talent team. Some players in each age category are discussed specifically. For example, I train in the weight room twice more than my teammates, and there are also individual video analyzes and we are also introduced to the first team,” says Straudi. He often lifts weights in the weight room together with the Werder professionals - “we say hello to each other, but we haven't had a chat with the stars yet,” he smiles.

Regular player in midfield In general, the Pusterer has already settled in well in Bremen, which is far away. He's currently living at a boarding school, getting his driver's license, school isn't causing him any major problems - and he's now doing really well on the football field after small bureaucratic problems at the beginning of the season. “Coach Mirko Votava (formerly a player at Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Werder Bremen, among others, editor's note) puts me in midfield; at first I played in the sixth position, then as an 'eighth' position," explains Straudi. It became clear in an interview with coach Votava that those responsible are satisfied with his performance: “Simon Straudi, who we brought from South Tyrol, is a positive surprise. At first he wasn’t eligible to play, but then he found himself and played some good games.”

Straudi's U-19 still had a bit of a hard time in the championship: “We have a lot of good talent in our team, but we are at the bottom of the table. After a bumpy start, we got in better shape towards the end and want to attack again in the second half of the season, which begins on February 5th. The standard is already quite high in Germany.” Physically the difference is not that big, “even the smallest mistakes are punished.”

“Professional football would of course be a dream” At some point you also talk about your goals. “Of course, professional football is my dream. But I don't think about it too much. “I just want to have a good season this year – and then we’ll see what happens,” said the likeable man from Bruneck, whose great role model is Bastian Schweinsteiger.

And what does an aspiring football professional do off the pitch? “There isn’t too much free time left. During the week I'm busy with football and school, Tuesday is the only day I don't have training. There’s a game at the weekend – and if there’s time, I’ll go to the Weser Stadium to watch the professionals.”

Simon Straudi, a football-loving boy through and through. And who knows: Maybe he will be seen in the Weser Stadium again in a few years - but not with the fans in the stands, but on the pitch in green and white uniform.
