Brixen fights for the Oberliga: “We have 7 final games”

Matchday 24 of the Oberliga is approaching. While FC Obermais holds all the cards in the battle for the championship, another big name, SSV Brixen, is fighting to stay in the league.

Manuel Sullmann doesn't beat around the bush and gets straight to the point. "We're currently in a place you don't want to end up. We have seven finals," says the Bressanone coach, looking at the table. Before Sunday's clash with Rovereto (7th), the cathedral city team is in a relegation spot.

On Wednesday, Brixen suffered another setback with their 2-5 cup exit at Merano. "They're a good team that would certainly compete well in the regional league. But we made it too easy for them and ultimately deserved to lose," Sullmann said, adding: "If I had to pick out one positive, it would be that we can now fully concentrate on the championship."

Sullmann hopes for experienced returnees

Sullmann says the team has been somewhat lacking in experience in recent weeks. He hopes that will change with the return of some key players: "It was clear to me that it would be very difficult until the end. The Oberliga is evenly matched, and the second half of the season is always a championship in its own right. As a team, we now have to bring the qualities needed in our situation to the pitch."

Sullmann is hopeful that his team might even be able to compete more expensively against supposedly stronger opponents: "We have to take it game by game, but it seems to me that we're finding it a bit easier against the good opponents." SSV Brixen can prove this in the coming weeks, with duels against Virtus Bozen and Vipo Trento, which is having a phenomenal spring season.

There are further top matches on Sunday in Rungg, where St. Pauls will face league leaders Obermais. In the regional league, league leaders Bruneck will face Lana on Saturday.
