It was already clear before the start of the Oberliga that it would be a difficult championship for Stegen. In the summer, the Pusterer even considered withdrawing from the league, but then sent a team to the highest regional league. The start of the championship was promising, but Stegen only managed to get one point from nine games. The consequence: last place in the rankings.
At the beginning of the week, coach Gennaro Covelli had to vacate his position. "I feel very sorry for him, but we had to change something. I hope that this measure will give the team a boost," said sporting director Werner Unterhofer. "Things haven't necessarily gone in our favor in recent weeks. Goals conceded in the final seconds, lots of injuries, and problems with the positioning of players. Of course, that shouldn't and shouldn't be an excuse. Now we hope that things will improve."
The father and the son take over
Things are looking up with a new coaching duo. The team is being taken over by the current assistant coach Peter Bacher. And his assistant will be his son Julian Bacher. Julian would actually be Stegen's captain, but after just four games he tore his cruciate ligament and has to take a break for months. "He wants to help us now in this way," says Unterhofer.Peter Bacher is the new coach in Stegen.
Peter Bacher, on the other hand, knows Stegen like the back of his hand. "He has been our assistant coach for eight years now, everyone knows and appreciates him. We want to continue like this until winter and then we will see how the situation develops," said the sporting director. Next Sunday, the bottom team in the Oberliga will face Levico at home. The gap to safety is currently seven points.
