Former Bayern talent dies at 18

Guo Jiaxuan, a young Chinese footballer who was once active in the talent division of FC Bayern Munich, has died as a result of a serious injury.

His club, Beijing Guoan, confirmed the death of the 18-year-old defender on Wednesday evening (local time) – one day before his 19th birthday. Guo had been declared brain dead weeks ago. "We have lost a child who loved football," the Beijing club said.

Guo suffered serious injuries in early February during a training match against RC Alcobendas in Madrid, when an opponent reportedly kneed him in the head during a challenge. Guo lost consciousness and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Shortly afterward, doctors in Spain declared him brain dead.

Family criticizes investigation

Guo was subsequently flown back to China for further examination. His family demanded clarification and access to footage of the accident. Guo's brother complained about a lack of support from Beijing Guoan and the Beijing Football Association. In a statement about the teenager's death, the club assured that it would continue to do everything possible to provide the family with the necessary support.

Guo was considered a great talent and made it to the Chinese U2023 national team in 17. That same year, he trained with the FC Bayern World Squad, a team of the German record champions comprised of international talents under the age of 19. Before his accident, he played for the U19 team of Beijing Guoan, which plays in the youth division of the Chinese Super League – and was named the best player, according to media reports.
