Max Reinthaler on the 1860 chaos: "Had heard nothing from the club"
Max Reinthaler has been under contract with 1860 Munich for two and a half years before the shock came last week: the Lions were denied a license for the 3rd division. What happens now for Reinthaler? We spoke at length with the Algund native about the chaos at 1860 and also about his private life.

Max Reinthaler recently married his longtime girlfriend Julia in Verona, whom he had met back in his Augsburg days. After the wedding, he and his wife went straight to Bali for their honeymoon. Nevertheless, Reinthaler found time for an interview with SportNews taken. The main focus was on 1860 Munich, which, for the second time since 2017, has to accept forced relegation to the Regionalliga due to liquidity problems.
"At first, it was a shock for us. We'd often heard that the club needed money. But that it had come to this was still a surprise for everyone. None of us players know what happens next. No one from the club has contacted us. Even the agents don't know anything. Probably because the whole thing is so complex. Everyone seems overwhelmed by the situation right now. We're only finding out everything through the media," explained Reinthaler, whose contract is actually only valid for the third division.

The fact that there's been absolutely no word from the club is somewhat disappointing for him. From a personal perspective, Reinthaler has actually had his best year at 1860 Munich – even if his dream of a third promotion (after Hansa Rostock and Wehen Wiesbaden) wasn't fulfilled in Munich. The 31-year-old was a regular starter in the Lions' back three. There had already been talks about a contract extension beyond 2027. But these are now, of course, on hold.
Staying is not excluded
“Basically, I’m open to anything – including staying at 1860. I feel completely at home in Munich. My wife is from the city, and I have many friends there. We live in the 1860 Munich district, Giesing. The 1860 Munich myth still lives on there. On match days, everything here turns blue and white. The fans start their day with a traditional Bavarian white sausage breakfast and then make the pilgrimage to the stadium together. At 1860 Munich, the old values of football are still alive, and as a true city club, it stands in stark contrast to the global giant FC Bayern,” said Reinthaler.Max Reinthaler (right) feels completely at home at cult club 1860 Munich. © max.36
According to Reinthaler, only a few young players from 1860 Munich have contracts for the Regionalliga, the fourth division. The established professionals, however, do not. "Right now, I'm just enjoying my vacation in Bali and trying to look at the situation objectively. I definitely want to play at the highest level possible. Financial considerations also play a role at my age. But if 1860 Munich manages to restructure properly, staying isn't out of the question," the defender explained.
"I could imagine a return to FC Südtirol." Max Reinthaler
Reinthaler, whose only appearance for Udinese Calcio was in the Europa League against Liverpool, also played for FC Südtirol during his youth. The Burggrafen native still follows the club's progress closely. "Last summer, there was some contact between me and the club. I could certainly imagine a return to FCS," Reinthaler concluded.
