This is what Xabi Alonso says about the Real Madrid rumors

Less than two months ago, Xabi Alonso extended his contract as coach at Bayer Leverkusen. The fact that his former club Real Madrid is looking for a coach is still a constant topic.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has responded calmly to rumors about a possible move to Real Madrid after the season. “It's too early. It's September, so that's not an issue," said the coach of the Bundesliga runner-up on Friday: "Of course I'm staying focused. We started the season well and I have to be the first to keep focused.”

The former world and European champions assured that the players were not fazed by the rumors either: “They know the football business. That wasn't an issue for anyone. We didn’t talk about it either.”

Radio Brand reported during the week that Alonso is the top candidate to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, who will leave Real Madrid in the summer of 2024 and then take over the Brazilian national soccer team. Alonso's special relationship with Real, where he played from 2009 to 2014, is well known. It is therefore assumed that he wants to and will become a coach there at some point in his career. However, the 41-year-old, for whom Bayer is his first first division position as a coach, extended his contract until 2026 at the beginning of August.
