Rape allegation against Ronaldo: Mayorga encouraged by #MeToo movement

Ronaldo vehemently denies Mayorga's 2009 rape allegation. On Wednesday, the 33-year-old star player from Italy's record champions Juventus Turin tweeted: "I expressly reject the allegations against me. Rape is a heinous crime that goes against everything I am and everything I believe in." It was only on Monday that the police in Las Vegas announced new investigations against the Portuguese European champion Ronaldo. "As much as I want to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to enrich themselves at my expense," he wrote. Meanwhile, Ronaldo's club Juventus Turin has jumped to the side of its superstar. The club said the allegations would “not change the opinion” that Juve had about the new star signing. "In a few months here, Cristiano Ronaldo has shown his professionalism and his dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus," it continued: "The incidents that allegedly occurred almost ten years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by everyone, who came into contact with this great champion." Ronaldo's supplier Nike, on the other hand, assesses the situation more critically. "We are deeply concerned about the disturbing allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely," a Nike spokesman told the French news agency AFP. In 2016, Ronaldo signed a lifetime contract worth millions with the US sporting goods giant. Ronaldo had previously received a letter from Portugal's association boss Fernando Gomes. In a statement to the national news agency Lusa, Gomes declared his "solidarity" with Ronaldo: "I believe his word because I have known him for many years and can testify to his integrity."
