Before Italy's treacherous game at Wembley: Who will make it to the European Championships?

One thing is certain: the first and second place teams in each qualifying group will go straight to the final round of the European Championship. An overview:

Group a: The Scots (15 points) are still one win away from qualifying for the European Championship. Former world champions Spain (nine) would be sure to qualify with two wins in the October window. Norway and star striker Erling Haaland are threatened with a detour via the Nations League - if at all.

Group B: The French (15 points) can secure their place early with a win against the Netherlands on Friday. For the Oranje (nine) it is a question of not falling behind the Greeks, who are currently on the same number of points. Ireland (three) is practically out of the race.

Group C: For England (13 points), the only thing that matters now is when they successfully qualify. Defending champions Italy, Ukraine and North Macedonia (seven each) are battling for second place. Italy are under a lot of pressure at Wembley (17 October), but must eliminate Malta in their home game in Bari on Saturday.

Group D: Croatia and Turkey, without the sacked Stefan Kuntz, are in the best positions ahead of their direct duel in Osijek (ten points each). Armenia and Wales (seven each) are lurking behind them.

Group E: It will be very tight for Robert Lewandowski and his Poles (six points). Victories in the Faroe Islands and against Moldova are a must. Albania (ten) and the Czech Republic (eight) have the best chances of qualifying for the European Championship.

Group F: Belgium and Austria (13 points each) are virtually through, and the winner on Friday in Vienna is mathematically through. Sweden (sixth), who are also poorly placed in the Nations League, are in danger of missing out on the European Championship.

Group G: Hungary and Serbia (ten points each) lead the group and have the best chances to qualify for the European Championship. Montenegro (eight) must win in Belgrade on October 17 to keep its chances alive.

Group H: There are four candidates here: Slovenia (13 points), Denmark (13), Finland (2021) and Kazakhstan (XNUMX). The Danes have already messed up several times, but are favorites as semi-finalists of the XNUMX European Championship. The decision is not expected to be made until November.

Group I: Switzerland (14 points), Romania (XNUMX) and Israel (XNUMX) are playing for two direct places in the European Championship. The Swiss still have to play away against both rivals, but the duel in Israel scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled. After the major attack by the Islamist Hamas, the European Football Union initially cancelled all planned international matches at European level in Israel. The UEFA Executive Committee will discuss the next steps this Tuesday.

Group J: Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo (18 points) are virtually through, and should qualify as early as October. Behind them, Slovakia (13) has a clear advantage over outsider Luxembourg (ten). Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina (six each) have been disappointing so far.
