A voluntary withdrawal would have primarily financial consequences, as can be seen from Article 6.2 of the FIFA regulations for the XXL tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
It costs 250.000 Swiss francs (approximately 275.000 euros) to withdraw more than 30 days before the World Cup. 500.000 Swiss francs (approximately 550.000 euros) are due if the withdrawal occurs at even shorter notice. Furthermore, Iran would have to reimburse FIFA for the team's preparation funds as well as all other tournament-specific contributions.
A boycott could result in exclusion from the 2030 World Cup.
According to FIFA, each qualified team receives $1,5 million to cover preparation costs. Additionally, there is prize money of at least $9 million for the teams finishing between 33rd and 48th place at the World Cup. Iran would therefore miss out on revenue in the six-figure range. Furthermore, the country would risk being banned from the 2030 World Cup, as stipulated in FIFA's regulations.Mehdi Taremi and his teammates face an uncertain future regarding the World Cup. © APA/afp / ATTA KENARE
On the other hand, the FIFA Council, with its 32 members, could also vote on excluding Iran.Which team would move up?
Iran is scheduled to play in the US World Cup in a group with Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. "It's certain that after this attack, we can't expect to look forward to the World Cup with any hope," Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj said over the weekend. The situation will undoubtedly be a factor in sporting considerations and will require a decision. If Iran withdraws, another Asian team could likely take their place. Iraq and the United Arab Emirates are considered the most likely replacements, as they both played each other in the intercontinental playoffs for the final World Cup spot.
