0-3 after half an hour. Many HCP fans must have shaken their heads, hoping their team wouldn't suffer too heavy a defeat. But then the Wolves turned things around, equalized, and ultimately only narrowly missed out on victory in a penalty shootout in front of around 450 spectators at the Latsch Ice Forum.
Returning goalkeeper Colin Furlong started in goal for the Wolves – and got off to a disastrous start. Elias Pul sent the HCP goalie the wrong way and slotted home the opening goal for Bayern after just under six minutes. Shortly before the first intermission buzzer, Kenny Agostino made it 2-0 (20th minute). The Puster Valley team shook off the setback in the locker room, but Ingolstadt struck again first. Riley Barber scored on a counter-attack after the South Tyroleans had clearly been the better side.
From 0:3 to 3:3
The reward came shortly after. Tommy Purdeller finished off a two-on-one counterattack, firing into the near corner and breathing new life into HCP (37th minute). The Wolves rallied, but had to wait for further goals. It wasn't until the final period that they scored again. Matthias Mantinger turned on the heat, drove the puck forward, and passed to Luke Moncada, who simply had to tap it in (47th minute). Finally, it was Alan Lobis who pounced on a rebound after a shot by Bardreau. In the penalty shootout, Moncada, Lobis, and Purdeller were all denied by ERC goaltender Jonas Stettmer, while Agostino scored for the Germans. HCP's next game is on Sunday against HC Litvinov from the Czech Republic (14 p.m.).
