Erik Hjorth comes to the South Tyrolean plateau for the defender position. The 23-year-old Swede was born on January 8, 2001 in Gothenburg (Sweden). The tall defender is 1,95 meters tall and weighs 94 kilograms.
He spent most of his youth career at Frölunda HC, then at Linköping HC for two years before traveling to North America for a year in 2019, where he was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the fourth round of the NHL draft as the 104th overall player . In America he played for the Sarnia Sting in the OHL and scored an impressive 60 points in 29 games. After his return to Europe, he moved to Finland, where he first played for the second division team IPK and the following year also made a few appearances for KalPa in the first division.
Last season, Hjorth was under contract with HC Vita Hästen in the Swedish second division HockeyAllsvenskan and scored nine points in 43 games. He has achieved the same results so far this season, when he played for the Canadian club Trois-Rivières Lions in the ECHL.
A place became available
Because a place for foreigners became available in the Rittner Buam squad due to the naturalization of Terrance Amorosa, those responsible for the reigning Italian champions went looking and found Hjorth as a reinforcement for the defense.“We wanted to add some depth in defense to be prepared for the rest of the Master Round and of course the playoffs. Erik (Hjorth, editor's note) has an impressive height and stature, he is also a good ice skater and is also very technically adept. He will definitely be a great help to us and can play against the Red Bull Hockey Juniors on Thursday,” said sports directors Dan Tudin and Alexander Eisath.
