Derby humiliation! Bolzano beats Pustertal
The first major South Tyrolean ice hockey derby is history. In front of around 4000 enthusiastic fans, HC Bozen sent their arch-rivals from Bruneck on their journey home to the east with a real lesson.

The HCB Südtirol Alperia has left its mark on the first big clash of the still young ICE season - and it did so with a bang. The Foxes, who were heavily upgraded this summer, defeated the HC Pustertal 5:2. The result only partially reflects the balance of power on the ice.
One thing in advance: HC Pustertal put in a brave performance against the title contenders, showing commitment, passion, toughness and also some pretty good ice hockey. The Wolves only have one thing to blame themselves for, namely not getting anything out of four power plays. Otherwise, the Bruneck team's bitter derby defeat was solely due to an opponent who was too powerful that evening.
HC Bozen offered absolute power hockey for almost 60 minutes, with beautiful offensive combinations, tactical discipline, passionate work in front of their own goal and a goalkeeper who was invincible for long stretches. In addition to goalie Sam Harvey, Cole Hults, who scored twice, shone. In addition, all four offensive blocks were convincing - even the "surplus" striker Pascal Brunner, who temporarily took the place of the injured Michele Marchetti in the second line.
The arena becomes a madhouse
In Pustertal, however, one could feel sorry for goalkeeper Olivier Roy. Although his teammates threw everything into the mix and HCP coach Jason Jaspers put all his foreign strikers in the first two blocks, the goalie was under constant fire at times. It was only in the final third, when the game was over, that the 300 or so Bruneck fans were able to celebrate two goals. They had previously tried to keep up the noise for two hours in the Bozen cauldron and did not let their men down even in the tricky situations. The decisive scenes
The arc lamp | A strange goal puts Bozen in the lead! Cole Hults simply shoots, the puck is deflected off the back of Pustertal defender Luca Zanatta and flies in an arc over goalie Olivier Roy into the net (9th). |
The dream pass | At the end of a quick counterattack, Dustin Gazley hits a wonderful pass into the middle, where Adam Helewka pushes the puck over the line – 2-0 (31'). |
The double packer | Hults scores for the second time this evening. This time, the defender beats Goalie Roy with a blueliner to the far post (47'). |
The brawl | After Tommaso Traversa drives into HCB goalie Sam Harvey, fists fly. Bozen's Adam Helewka pulls Pustertal's Ivan Deluca's jersey over his head, but then mercifully lets go. Meanwhile, HCP youngster Fabian Gschliesser stretches Spornberger to the ground. The fans go crazy and celebrate the players like gladiators. |
The lesson | In the final phase, the Foxes lead the Wolves. Giordano Finoro scores with a man advantage to make it 4-0 (49th minute), then Luca Frigo completes a double one-two with Daniel Mantenuto to make it 5-0 (53rd minute). Bruneck's Cedric Lacroix (57th minute) and Mikael Frycklund (60th minute) only tried to improve the score. |
With this next clear victory, HC Bozen consolidates its lead in the table, while Pustertal once again bit the bullet with the same result after the 2:5 against Fehervar. The Foxes (against Vorarlberg) and the Wolves (against Innsbruck) both continue with a home game next Friday.
