Gerry Fleming most recently worked for the Swiss first division club Kloten Flyers.

Two ICE clubs clarify the coaching question

This Monday, two clubs in the ICE Hockey League named their coach for the 2024/25 season. While Vienna has found what it is looking for in Switzerland, the KAC is relying on the tried and tested.

The new head coach of the Vienna Capitals is Gerry Fleming. The 56-year-old Canadian most recently worked for the Swiss first division ice hockey team EHC Kloten, but was released there during the past season and replaced by Stefan Mair from Bolzano. In Vienna he received a one-year contract with the option of an extension.

Fabian Scholz will act as his assistant coach for the Caps, and Bernhard Starkbaum will support him as goalkeeper coach. The duo had already worked in these roles last season when the Caps missed out on the play-offs in the ICE under interim coach Christian Dolezal.

KAC also relies on Canadians

Record champions KAC continue to rely on Canadian head coach Kirk Furey. The former Red Jackets defender extended his contract for another two seasons together with assistant coach David Fischer and goalkeeper coach Andrej Hocevar. The club announced this on Monday. In Furey's debut season as head coach, the KAC dominated the regular season and lost 3-4 to Salzburg in the play-off final.
