A long jumper redeems Germany's athletics

Long jump, women: Gold at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, gold at the 2019 World Cup in Doha, gold at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo - and now gold at the World Cup in Eugene: Malaika Mihambo is and remains the best long jumper in the world. With 7,12 meters she won the title on the last day of the first World Championships in the USA.

Ese Brume from Nigeria secured silver with 7,02 meters. Bronze went to the Brazilian Leticia Oro Melo, whose first and only valid jump of 6,89 meters was enough. “It was only 7,12 meters today, but I'm still very happy that I was able to defend my title,” said Mihambo, who missed the world best for the year by just one centimeter.

Pole vault, men: Armand Duplantis was once again hovering above everything - he had already secured the title when the Swede reached for the world record and jumped 6,21 meters on his second attempt. With 5,94 meters, silver went to Christopher Nilsen from the USA, bronze went to Ernest John Obiena from the Philippines.

Decathlon: The Frenchman Kevin Mayer won the world title with 8816 points. Silver went to Pierce Lepage from Canada with 8701 points ahead of Zachery Ziemek, who collected 8676 points.

5000 meters, men: Favorite Jakob Ingebrigtsen has secured the world title. The Olympic champion over 1500 meters needed 13:09,24 minutes for the five kilometers. Silver went to Jacob Krop from Kenya, 0,74 seconds behind, and Oscar Chelimo from Uganda took bronze.

800 meters, women: Olympic champion Athing Mu is now also world champion. In front of her home crowd, she defended her lead in the final meters and was 1 seconds faster than Keely Hodgkinson from England in 56,30:0,08 minutes. The 20-year-old had already won silver at the Olympics in Tokyo. Bronze went to Mary Moraa from Kenya.

100 meter hurdles: In the semifinals, the Nigerian Tobi Amusan surprisingly raced to a world record of 12,12 seconds, and in the final the clock stopped at 12,06 seconds. There was gold for that - although it wasn't another world record for the 25-year-old due to too much tailwind. Britany Anderson from Jamaica took silver in 12,23 seconds, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico took bronze.

4x400 meter relays: The USA relay teams won both world championship titles in a superior manner. The men needed 2:56,17 minutes for gold, the world record of 1993:2 minutes, which has stood since 54,29, remained out of reach. Silver went to Jamaica and the team from Belgium took bronze. In the final race of the World Championships, 400 meter hurdles world champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin led her team as the final runner to a dominant victory ahead of Jamaica and Great Britain.

A long jumper redeems Germany's athletics

On the last day of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (USA), Germany won its first gold – thanks to Malaika Mihambo. The long jumper continues to be the benchmark in her discipline. There are world records in the pole vault and the 100 meter hurdles.
