World Athletics Championships: surprise medal for Azzurro

The first medals at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest were awarded over 20 kilometers in walking. The title went to the two-time European champion Álvaro Martín from Spain in the world's best time of 1:17:32 hours. He won ahead of the Swede Perseus Karlström and the Brazilian Caio Bonfim. In addition to Linke, five other athletes beat their respective national records. “I think this should be one of the fastest races in history,” said the 34-year-old at his seventh World Championship.

The American Ryan Crouser successfully defended his title as shot put world champion and narrowly missed out on setting a world record. The Olympic champion and world record holder missed his own record by just five centimeters in the final push of 23,51 meters. The 30-year-old had already triumphed at the previous title fights in Eugene a year ago. The Italian Leonardo Fabbri surprisingly took silver with 22,34 meters in the first men's World Cup decision in the new athletics stadium. Former world champion Joe Kovacs from the USA secured bronze with 22,12 meters.

The first women's title in the 10.000 meters went to Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay, who won in 31:27,18 minutes. In the hard-fought finish sprint, the Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan fell a few meters from the line and had to let defending champion Letesenbet Gidey and Ejgayehu Taye pass. This meant that all three medals went to the Ethiopian team. The race took place without German runners.

USA triumphs in the relay The World Championship title in the 4x400 meter mixed relay went to the USA, which won in a world record time of 3:08,80 minutes ahead of the teams from Great Britain and the Czech Republic. The Dutchwoman Femke Bol fell shortly before the finish in the thrilling gold fight.
