Christian Obrist wins his 13th Italian championship title

Christian Obrist can rely on his final spurt. “It’s the same as the 2008 Olympics, but the basic condition isn’t the same,” said the 31-year-old. Obrist won the tactical race in 3:48.16, 61/100 ahead of Marco Salami. Obrist's part-time performance was particularly strong in the last 300 m. In 39,7 he was faster than the European champion a week ago in Helsinki. For the man from Brixen it was his 13th Italian championship title. It was his first victory in outdoor title fights since 2007 and his second home victory after the one in 2005. Obrist will also be competing in the 800 m tomorrow.

South Tyrol can also look forward to two more gold medals. Simona La Mantia won the triple jump with 14.24 m. The fourth-place finisher at the European Championships is the daughter of the former Italian champion Monika Mutschlechner from Bruneck, but grew up in Sicily. Like Obrist, La Mantia had already won in Brixen in 2005. Paolo Dal Molin won his first outdoor Italian championship title. The Piedmontese, who works for the Athletic Club '96 from Bolzano, won the final of the 110 m hurdles in 13.74. Preliminary winner Emanuele Abate did not take part in the final due to an injury. Dal Molin had already won the Italian indoor championship title in the 60 m hurdles this year.

At the end of the second day of competition, Peter Lanziner almost achieved the sensation. Only in the very last meter of the 5000 m run did Trudner miss the bronze medal - by 14/100. Lanziner was still overjoyed, after all, he improved his best time by 11 seconds to 14:07.96. Markus Ploner also ran very well. The 31-year-old from Franzensfeste ran sixth in a personal best time of 14:11.43. Marco Colombo also did very well. The versatile man from Bolzano qualified for the final of the 53,00 m hurdles in 400 seconds and also impressed in the pole vault, coming eighth (4.80 m). In the same competition, Manfred Menz from Meran took sixth place (4.95 m). In addition to Obrist (800 m), Olympic starter Silvia Weissteiner (5000 m) and discus thrower Hannes Kirchler will also be in action on Sunday.
