Wedel is back in style in Reschen

Konstantin Wedel, him again! The man from Nuremberg, who was not content with victory in the special edition of the 2019 night race, won the 22nd edition of the Reschenseelauf today. An important win, first place close to his overall record and an attempt to improve his time. At the end of the 15,3 km around Lake Reschen, he crossed the finish line in Graun im Vinschgau, where he greeted the half-submerged bell tower, after 47:32 minutes, beating last year's winner Andrea Soffientini, with whom he shared more than three quarters of the race had shared the lead by 41 seconds. In the final, Soffientini tried to stretch, winning about 20 seconds, then the German's lunge and the finish between two wings of the crowd.

Wedel, who has also been second and third once in the past, won the 2019 night edition in record time and now confirmed his superiority. “The Reschenseelauf is a fantastic event, I'm here for the fourth time and have been on the podium several times. The race is not easy and it is very hot today,” he said after crossing the finish line. On the third echelon of the podium was Khalid Jbari from Bolzano, who in truth had not had a good day and even tended to give up in the first 10 kilometers; Then he picked up the pace, teamed up with South Tyrolean Markus Ploner and pulled away in the final. Of the 2.300 registered participants, over 2.000 were at the start, attracted by the wonderful day, which was warm but cooled down at times in the passages at the edge of the forest.

It was always a lively leadership race for women too. At the start, Lisa Leuprecht set the pace, but by the fifth kilometer the Austrian Bernadette Schuster was on her heels, passed her and then took the lead, which she held until the finish. Schuster managed her lead wisely and crossed the finish line in 1:52 hours. This is certainly not an extraordinary time, but enough to add her name to the extensive roll of honor. Second place went to the South Tyrolean Ylvie Folie from St. Valentin auf der Haide, who was able to climb the second podium relay with 3'14" ahead of the Tuscan Ioana Lucaci from Romania.

The Austrian was very satisfied: “The race was very hard because I did a mountain race last week that was particularly difficult. But it was great, the race is beautiful and the race at Lake Reschen really moved me. This is my first time here, I've been training here, but now I'm finally racing again. I do all kinds of running, marathons, mountain running... I try many types. Last year I had problems with my legs and now I'm trying to figure out what I can do, I'm back and feeling good. I was the Austrian national running champion in 2012 and took part in many cross-country races, winning around 25 titles.

But the Reschenseelauf is above all an event for amateurs who particularly appreciate the route around the South Tyrolean lake: a flat first part, a second part with ups and downs, short but in a continuous sequence. Thomas and Claudia Wenning, who got married last year, were also there again... at the Reschenseelauf: “It's always nice to come back, last year we experienced unique emotions on this route. Today it's very hot and I'm not as young as I used to be, but it's always nice," said Thomas, while Claudia replied: "It's really a great feeling and the people are very friendly, our wish is that To be able to run races every year for the next 25 years!”

The finishes lasted until late in the evening, while participants, accompanying people and spectators celebrated near the finish line. In the afternoon, the young people took to the track at the Apple Run. A swarm of young runners sparked enthusiasm for the 22nd race in advance.
