The Bolzano New Year's Eve run casts its shadow ahead

The oldest New Year's Eve run is that of Sao Paolo, the largest is that of Madrid - this is why the BOclassic in Bolzano deserves the title "world class" more than any other run at the turn of the year. In recent years, Olympic champions, world and European champions and world record holders have thrilled audiences along the 10-kilometer route through Bolzano's old town. To ensure that it stays that way, the organizers have been working on the composition of this year's field of participants for months.

The organizing committee led by President Gerhard Warasin gave a first insight into the starting list on Wednesday morning at a press conference in the Bolzano town hall. “The numerous world-class athletes who have remained loyal to us for years have contributed to us becoming a fixture in the international athletics circus,” says Warasin, who adds: “A majority of last year’s runners will too will be competing again this year.” In other words, this would include, in particular, the bronze medalist from the Olympic Games in Beijing, Edwin Soi, as well as the young Italian star Andrea Lalli. The Kenyan Soi will aim to shake Sergej Lebid's record of five BOclassic victories in a row. At the moment he has three wins in a row.

Silvia Weissteiner has to pass For the women, athlete manager Gianni Demadonna was able to sign 38-year-old German Irina Mikitenko, the world's best marathon runner in recent years. However, local hero and BOclassic ambassador Silvia Weissteiner, who only recently started light training again due to a long-term injury, will not be taking part. “I'm on the road to recovery, but I can't think of starting in Bolzano at the moment. But I will try to get back to my old strength so that I can attack again at my home race next year,” announced the 30-year-old guest. After the European Cross Country Championships on December 12th in Albufeira, Demadonna wants to present more top athletes for the New Year's Eve run. Until then, local athletics fans will have to be patient. The active ones among them can now prepare for the fun run on December 19st every Tuesday at 31 p.m. at the training sessions at the Bolzano Talferwiesen, which are open to everyone.
