Brixia Meeting: South Tyrol's talents in international comparison

The field of participants this year includes 21 teams, four of which come from abroad (Baden/Württemberg, Bavaria, Ticino, Slovenia), while the remaining teams come from the Italian regions. This year the selections from Sicily and Sardinia are also taking part for the first time. The best U18s in Italy will all be at the start in Brixen, as the “Brixia Meeting” is the last test before the Italian Championships in Rieti (June 20-22).

Calliari, Realdon, Spagnolli and Fusaro are the South Tyrolean hopefuls

From a local perspective, Julia Calliari and Alessandra Realdon from the Bozen Running Club as well as Marco Spagnolli and Raffaele Fusaro from the Athletic Club 96 Bozen are among the highest-profile hopefuls. Calliari won the 100 m sprint in Brixen last year. She then reached the semi-finals at the U18 World Cup in Donetsk. At the beginning of May she set a new national record of 12,02 seconds and improved the old record set by Karmen Baumgartner from Bruneck in 1978 by four hundredths. Last week Calliari missed qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games in China by just two hundredths. The 17-year-old from Siebeneich took 7th place at the European elimination competitions in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Calliaris' teammate Alessandra Realdon, on the other hand, will compete in the 100 m hurdles. She is the reigning U16 Italian champion in the 80 m hurdles. Three weeks ago she improved her best time on the longer distance to 14.34 seconds. This is the fifth best time in Italy this year.

The 400 m runner Raffaele Fusaro from Bolzano set a new U18 national record of 49,75 seconds at the school championships in L'Aquila last week. In doing so, he beat Christian Pedratscher's old record from 1989 by 41 hundredths. Fusaro is the first South Tyrolean U18 runner to complete the 400m in under 50 seconds.

His teammate Marco Spagnolli is also aiming for the podium in Brixen. He competes in the 1500 m, where he has a best time of 4.02,42:XNUMX minutes.

A total of 30 athletes (15 boys and 15 girls) were called up for the Brixia Meeting. Marco Andreatta is responsible for the selection. The men's team is coached by Hans Pircher, Pierluigi Putzu and Franco Cubich, the women's team by Getrud Bacher and Waltraud Mattedi.

The Brixia Meeting begins on Saturday afternoon from 14.30:9.30 p.m. with the all-around competition. On Sunday the competitions start at XNUMX:XNUMX a.m. with the men's pole vault and the women's javelin throw.
