Fast, faster, Calliari - gold in the sprint at the Italian Championships

After three years (Marion Kastl 2008 over 80 m H), South Tyrol has another U16 Italian champion. And like Kastl, she comes from Siebeneich. Julia Calliari, just 14 years old, won gold in the 80m sprint in Jesolo in 10.22. The runner-up was already 9/100 behind. Calliari was already the fastest in the preliminary run. She trains at the Bozen Running Club under coach Hans Pircher. Calliari, the second South Tyrolean youth Italian champion this year, also comes from Siebeneich. Marion Kastl won gold among the juniors (U20) in Brixen in June.

Andreas Zagler from Kalter (2nd in the javelin throw with 55.08 m) and Lisa Seppi from SV Lana (2nd in the pentathlon) won the medals they had hoped for. Seppi, already third last year, set a new national record with 4131 points. However, the second medal in the javelin throwing was completely surprising. Stefanie Messner from St. Ulrich won bronze with the same distance as the runner-up with 39.42 m. Messner, who competes for SG Eisacktal, improved her personal best distance by five meters.

There were also a number of other top performances. The 14-year-old Anna-Lena Hofer (SC Meran) improved her best time over 2000 m by 10 seconds to 6:40.74 and thus took an excellent fourth place. Daniel Volgger (SG Eisacktal) also jumped a new record in the high jump with 1.84 m. Volgger took fifth place, level with the third-place finisher.

Valentine Alber also came fifth in the pentathlon. With her time of 12.41 over the 80 m hurdles, the all-rounder from Merano would have even won a medal in the specialist category. 14-year-old Franziska Kofler (SV Lana) also came in sixth with a best performance of 1.53 m in the high jump.

State coach Karl Schöpf was full of praise: "To be honest, I can't remember such a good result. Four medals are a huge success and eleventh place in the regional rankings is also good. The best five results were achieved by athletes from five different clubs . This is proof of good youth work across the board. The selection showed an exemplary team spirit. With Hans Ladurner, Franco Cubich and Giordana Turaro, I had a great coaching team at my side."

In fact, the 2011 medal tally was the best since the 90s. In 1994, South Tyrol won five medals (2-1-2).
