A Mühlbach martial artist shines internationally
The “Youth League”, the largest karate tournament in 2023 for athletes under the age of 21, is currently taking place in Jesolo - and there are two athletes from Karate Mühlbach who have exceeded all expectations: Fabian Pezzei and Florian Filehner.

18-year-old Florian Fiwickeler from Vals competed in the U21, -75kg category. After the bye in the first round and the win against a Spaniard in the second round, his tournament ended in the third round with a narrow 0-1 loss against an athlete from Ukraine. “Nevertheless, Fiwickeler worthy of representing South Tyrol with excellent technical and tactical performances at this international youth tournament in which over 4.000 athletes take part,” said coach Martin Pezzei.
The 18-year-old Fabian Pezzei from Mühlbach was the best Italian in his U21, -84kg category and achieved an excellent seventh place. After the bye in round one, he won 3-1 in the second round against an athlete from Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2-0 in round three against a Swede and 1-0 in round four against an athlete from Slovakia. In round five, the pool final, he was defeated 0-1 by an athlete from Bosnia and Herzegovina and lost 0-3 in the consolation round by an athlete from Belgium.

“If you consider that the opponents of our two athletes are almost all wearing the flag of their nation on the right side of their karate gi (karate suit), which means they are being supported in a special way by their nation and this year they are showing off their skills with corresponding performances “It is clear that our athletes are a clear exclamation mark of the level of Karate Mühlbach,” says coach Pezzei.
