“Not eaten for 4 weeks”: Espargaro back after horror crash

The 32-year-old motorcycle racer working for KTM had a serious fall at the season opener in Portimao at the end of March. Two weeks after his comeback in Silverstone, Espargaro is now attacking again in Spielberg at the weekend. “I couldn't eat for four weeks and lost a lot of weight,” is how he described his ordeal.

The former Moto2 world champion lost eight kilograms of muscle mass and had to deal with even more delicate problems in addition to a bruised lung, a broken jaw and a total of eight broken bones - including spinal vertebrae. “He fought vomiting for three days because he was sick. At the start in Portugal, Espargaro was thrown from his motorcycle during training and crashed into the barrier. The racing doctors thought a comeback was impossible, and the broken vertebrae raised doubts about the racing future of Aleix Espargaro's younger brother. But Pol Espargaro fought back thanks to the support of his wife and took twelfth place again at Silverstone.

He had already visited the KTM team in Mugello. “It was very emotional to have the guy sitting in the box. There were tears in my eyes several times,” said Beirer about Espargaro’s return and looked ahead to the race weekend in Styria. “In Spielberg he doesn’t have to pull the chestnuts out of the fire, he should give himself two or three more races and build everything up.”
