South Tyrol's Torballers celebrate historic success

Being able to participate in sports is not something that can be taken for granted, especially for blind and visually impaired people, nor is achieving international success while doing so. BSSG South Tyrol has achieved this.

Last weekend, the goalball team of the South Tyrol Alperia Sports Group for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BSSG) won the Innsbruck Alpine Cup in the goalball discipline.

With Christian Mair, Peter Mair, Manuel Ninz, Armin Plaikner, Gabriel Psenner and coach Marco Grazioli, the winner's trophy was brought to South Tyrol for the first time in the 23rd participation. Christian Mair was also named top scorer.

But the BSSG is not resting on its laurels; next weekend it will be taking part in an international goalball tournament in Thessaloniki (Greece), followed by the goalball tournament in Amriswil (Switzerland) on November 2nd.

General information and useful facts

The special thing about goalball is that all players wear opaque glasses, so blind, visually impaired and normally sighted people can play sports together under the same conditions.

Blind sports have existed in South Tyrol for more than 50 years. In addition to the sporting aspect, the focus is primarily on the motor development of visually impaired people and the social added value that is achieved through inclusive physical activity both internally and externally.
