South Tyrolean Games: These are the dates you should remember

The first medals will be awarded at the 2024 Olympics in Paris starting Saturday. The South Tyrolean participants will be involved right from the start. We have an overview of all their competition dates.

Even without the ill Jannik Sinner, local sports fans can look forward to eventful days - including in terms of how the South Tyrolean athletes perform. A quick glance at the calendar reveals that (almost) everything for them takes place in the first week of the world's largest sporting event.

Already on Saturday, sports shooter Barbara Gambaro (Schlanders) and volleyball superstar Simone Giannelli (Bolzano) will be the stage. Gambaro can expect a lot, especially on the opening day in the mixed competition, and the day after that she will be competing in the 10-meter air rifle shooting qualification. On Sunday, table tennis player Deborah Vivarelli (Kaltern) will be involved in the action. She will face an extremely tough opponent in the form of the tournament's number three, the Japanese Hina Hayata. The same applies to Giorgia Piccolin (Bolzano), who will face eighth-seeded Miu Hirano, also from Japan, in the first round on Monday.

Second Olympic week with question marks

The fifth South Tyrolean in the group, triathlete Verena Steinhauser (Brixen), will have to wait until next Wednesday before she starts her second Olympic Games. She is seeded in the individual race. Another appearance could follow five days later in the mixed relay.

The same applies to Giannelli, who is chasing Olympic gold with Italy's volleyball team and is thus South Tyrol's greatest hope for a medal. If the Azzurri survive the preliminary round, they will be in the quarter-finals in the second week of the Olympics and possibly in the semi-finals and final.
