The Spanish world number three beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7:6 (7:5), 6:2, 6:2 and thus made it into the third round. There, Alcaraz will face US professional Frances Tiafoe.
In the previous only encounter with Vukic, the Spaniard had come up short. However, the duel took place in the 2020 French Open qualification under very different circumstances. The then 17-year-old was still number 193 in the world, but he is now a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner. The 21-year-old recently won the French Open in the final against Alexander Zverev.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev, ranked fifth in the world rankings, won a tough match. The Russian beat Frenchman Alexandre Müller (ATP 102) 6:7, 7:6, 6:4 and 7:5. The match lasted three and a half hours and Müller ended it with a double fault. Fabio Fognini had already caused a surprise earlier, knocking out Casper Ruud, ranked eight in the world, 6:4, 7:5, 6:7 and 6:3.One round further: Emma Raducanu © APA/afp / ANDREJ ISAKOVIC
In the women's event, Coco Gauff (WTA 2) confidently made it into the third round. The American made short work of Romanian Anca Todoni with a score of 6:2 and 6:1. Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu also put in an impressive performance in front of her own fans. The Brit defeated Elise Mertens (WTA 33) 6:1 and 6:2.
