Dominic Thiem: An Austrian sports great is resigning

Former US Open winner Dominic Thiem will end his tennis career after this season. The 30-year-old Austrian announced this on social media on Friday.

“I have a very important, very sad and at the same time very beautiful message for you: The 2024 season will be my last,” said Thiem in a video. One reason for the resignation was his wrist, another was his emotional world. He thought about it for a long time. It is now the right decision and he is happy with it.

The former top ten player and two-time French Open finalist will go down in history as one of the most successful tennis players in Austria. In 2020 he celebrated his biggest victory in the final in New York against the German Alexander Zverev with his triumph at the US Open. In a memorable final, Thiem ruined his long-time rival's Grand Slam title debut despite being 0-2 down and was crowned champion. His best world ranking was third and he celebrated a total of 17 titles.

In recent years, however, the Austrian has no longer reached his previous world-class level. A serious wrist injury bothered him, he had to take a long break and was unable to keep up with the leaders. He suffered early defeats in many tournaments. Thiem is currently ranked 117th in the world rankings. There had recently been speculation about the end of his career.
