Kalinskaya and Musetti lose in the final

Jessica Pegula, ranked fifth in the world rankings, has won the highly competitive tennis tournament in Berlin. The American defeated Jannik Sinner's Russian girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya in the high-class final of the WTA 500 tournament on Sunday.

Pegula won 6:7 (0:7), 6:4, 7:6 (7:3) and got ready for the grass court classic in Wimbledon with her fifth singles title. In the third set, the 30-year-old was already 1:4 behind. She later fended off five match points and finally took her first chance to win after 2:38 hours.

Pegula was not one of the favorites at the event with prize money of 922 US dollars, but also benefited from withdrawals from the title candidates. Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova and crowd favorite Ons Jabeur as well as Grand Slam winners Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina were unable to finish their matches due to injuries.

Meanwhile, there was no happy ending for Lorenzo Musetti, who, like Sinner, played his first grass court final on Sunday. The 22-year-old lost 1:6 and 6:7 to the American Tommy Paul (ATP 13) at the traditional Queen's Club. In the tiebreak of the second set, Musetti, who will improve to 25th place in the world rankings, missed a set point. Paul will be the number 1 player from the USA from Monday.
