Raonic gives up: Sinner in the semi-finals

Jannik Sinner secured entry into the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam without any major loss of strength: The 22-year-old benefited from the abandonment of his opponent Milos Raonic.

The quarter-finals in Rotterdam had a special meaning for Sinner, as he was able to claim his 200th victory on the ATP Tour. Given the young age, this number is simply impressive. His opponent Milos Raonic did everything he could to postpone Sinner's anniversary on Friday evening, but the Canadian's resistance only lasted one sentence. With the score at 7:6 and 1:1 in favor of the South Tyrolean, Raonic gave up due to a leg injury.

The match started as one could expect: Raonic set the pace with his serve, Sinner only brought a few returns into the field. When the score was 2-2, the former Wimbledon finalist made numerous mistakes with his forehand. The consequence was an early break for Simone Vagnozzi's protégé. Anyone who thought that Sinner would pull away was disappointed. The 22-year-old made some inexplicable mistakes, handed the break back to his opponent and even faced two set points when the score was 4:5. However, he remained aggressive and eliminated the danger.

Raonic, who had recently taken a medical timeout, now began to move a little slower. The former world number 3 was visibly in pain. Sinner took advantage of this, played a solid tiebreak and took the first set. Raonic, who continued to serve excellently, had enough shortly afterwards. He turned to the chair umpire, shook Sinner's hand and said goodbye to the fans. Sinner's working day lasted just 65 minutes.

In the semi-final round there will now be a repeat of last year's semi-final: Sinner will meet local hero Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 29), whom he defeated last year with 7:5 and 7:6. Almost two months ago, the Sexten native had the upper hand in the Davis Cup with 7:6 and 6:1. Saturday's match starts at 19.30:XNUMX p.m.
