Rome's new emperor: Zverev triumphs in the final

Alexander Zverev won the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome and celebrated a perfect dress rehearsal for the French Open.

The Olympic champion won the final of the clay court event in the Italian capital on Sunday against Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6:4, 7:5 and thus won his first title this year. A week before the start of the second Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season in Paris, Zverev showed a very strong performance and converted his fourth match point after 1:41 hours.

“The win means a lot to me. Rome is a very special place for me,” said Zverev, who had already won in Rome in 2017. Sunday's title was his first at the Masters 1000 level since his serious foot injury two years ago. “It's a very special week for me. The focus is of course on Paris, but first I enjoy this victory.”

Zverev dominated the action against Jarry from the start. The 27-year-old served incredibly well and put the Chilean under constant pressure. After 41 minutes, Zverev took the first round with the first set point.

The Hamburg native remained the dominant player in the second set. Jarry didn't get a single break point in the entire match. Zverev, on the other hand, missed two break chances when the score was 2-1, but he didn't let that bother him. In the fourth attempt he secured his second title in Rome.

Zverev is now going to Paris as one of the favorites. Last year he reached the semi-finals at Stade Roland Garros. Since no player has been able to dominate so far in the current clay court season, Zverev has a chance of winning his first title at a Grand Slam tournament.
