Despite being acquitted after two positive doping tests, Jannik Sinner still faces a ban. WADA announced that it had filed an appeal in the case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne on Thursday. WADA, based in Montreal, is demanding "a ban of one to two years" for Sinner.
World number one Sinner tested positive twice in March for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol. The 23-year-old was not banned. The responsible tennis agency ITIA justified the acquittal by saying that the two-time Grand Slam tournament winner could not be proven to have acted intentionally or negligently.
WADA vs ITIA: Was the offence negligent or not?
According to WADA, this finding is "incorrect according to the current rules". However, the authority is not demanding that any additional results be deleted in addition to those already ordered by the court of first instance. Sinner won the US Open at the beginning of September. For the South Tyrolean, this means that the doping case has no impact on his ATP ranking.“WADA is requesting a ban of between one and two years.” Extract from the official press release of WADA
Sinner explained in a statement he published on social media that the substance entered his body via the hands of his physiotherapist. According to the statement, the therapist used an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol to treat a cut on his finger. The WADA considers this to be negligent behavior, but the ITIA disagrees.
Affected physio no longer in Sinner’s team
According to the ITIA, scientific experts considered Sinner's explanation to be credible. This is why the tennis agency refrained from suspending Sinner, at least for the time being. Sinner had reacted after the positive doping tests became known and withdrew from the affected physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi and athletic trainer Umberto Ferrara Cut.Edit Profile
