Sinner's final opponent: The hearts of fans and women fly to him

For Jannik Sinner, Easter Sunday could become a historic day. Grigor Dimitrov, who faces the Sexten player in the final in Miami, wants to prevent this. But who is the Bulgarian?

Jannik Sinner can make history on Easter Sunday – for the umpteenth time in the past few months. Should he reach the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami (from 21 p.m. CEST / live ticker on SportNews) win, then he will be the new number 2 in the world. The Sesto native would thus break his own record: he is currently number 3; no tennis player from Italy has ever been this high.

There is still one last hurdle standing in Sinner's way. And her name is Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian is in top form at the Masters on the east coast of the USA and eliminated, among others, Carlos Alcaraz (“He made me look like a 13-year-old,” said the Spaniard) and Alexander Zverev on his way to the final. By reaching the final, Dimitrov, currently number 12 in the world, will make it back into the top 10.

He was once compared to Federer

The 32-year-old Dimitrov has had a turbulent career. The highlight: winning the 2017 ATP Finals, which pushed him to number 3 in the world rankings. The Bulgarian was already called the new Roger Federer, and for a special reason: Dimitrov is one of the very few professionals on the tour who still plays a one-handed backhand - that was Federer's big trademark and is a particularly aesthetic shot that Fans ecstatic.

However, the Federer comparison seemed to be more of a burden than a driving force for Dimitrov. And so in August 2019 the Bulgarian even slipped to position 78 in the world rankings. Next week he will be back in the top 2018 for the first time since October 10.

Love stories make headlines

But Dimitrov is not only making a name for himself on the tennis court. In recent years he has also made headlines with his love stories. At the beginning of his career, the Bulgarian was in a relationship with superstar Maria Sharapova for almost three years - a true dream couple in the tennis scene.

Dimitrov later also had a relationship with Nicole Scherzinger, frontwoman of the Pussycat Dolls and at the time newly separated from Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton. There were also other liaisons, for example last year the tennis professional was rumored to be in a relationship with the Romanian supermodel Madalina Ghenea.

Grigor Dimitrov makes both fans' and women's hearts beat faster. Jannik Sinner shouldn't care: He wants to grab his third title of the season on Sunday evening in Miami and thus become the new number 2 in the world.
